In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
